Overseers of the Caribbean: Indigenous and Afrodescendant Women in the Struggle and Protection of Their Territories

Indigenous and Afro-descendant women of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast find ourselves on the front line of defense of our territories, bravely resisting despite the numerous forms of violence we face due to the invasion of mestizo settlers, who advance like a stampede, razing the forests and dispossessing entire communities of their ancestral territories. For this reason, we join our voices and share our experiences through the story of three fictional characters in the story «Guardians of the Caribbean».

Krasa, Wanda and Slilma give life to our experiences in a context in where we cannot openly reveal our faces and names, submerged in an insecure, violent and oppressive environment. We would like to express our gratitude to all the women who contributed with their experiences and knowledge to make this video possible. It is through networking that we will be able to amplify the voices silenced by violence, fear and oppression. We also extend our gratitude to those who are watching this video and contributing to its dissemination. Your support is critical to the visibility of this cause.
